COWZ

A Classification of Workplace Zones from the 2011 Censuses for the United Kingdom

COWZ is a set of geodemographic classifications of Workplace Zones (WZs) based on data from the 2011 Censuses of the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The classifications categorise WZs according to similarities across a range of census variables; as such, they provide a rich resource for users seeking to understand the characteristics of workers and workplaces at the small area level across the UK.

COWZ-EW is a classification of Workplace Zones for England and Wales.

COWZ-UK is a classification of Workplace Zones for the UK.

COWZ-EW was developed by the University of Southampton and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). COWZ-UK was developed by (ONS) and the University of Southampton, in collaboration with National Records for Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). Both products are available under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

This website provides an overview of the data and methods used to create COWZ-EW and COWZ-UK. The download page provides access to the datasets and documentation for COWZ-EW, together with links to the COWZ-UK materials which are published by ONS.
